05 April 1972 – Headline: “Ex derby Star to lead Town – Hennessey is new Tamworth boss”
Former Welsh International Terry Hennessey was appointed manager of Tamworth on Tuesday night. He takes over from Gordon Dougall who was caretaker manager following the resignation of Harold Cox, but who was appointed manager only a week ago. Before joining Derby County from Nottingham Forest for a fee of £100,000 in February 1970, Hennessey was a Birmingham City player and an international for Wales. He made a total of 79 first team appearances for Derby. By joining Tamworth he has put himself out of the running for a job with Fourth Division Mansfield. He was one of 40 applicants for the manager’s job, but having failed to hear anything from the Football League side he decided to join Tamworth. Club chairman Harry Godfrey said yesterday: “The chance to get Terry Hennessey was one the club could not miss. Gordon Dougall understood the position and willingly stepped down.” Mr. Dougall will resume as manager of the reserves squad which is in the running for West Midlands League first division honours.
