Harry Shepherd

02 December 1983 – Headline: “Shepherd quits”
Harry Shepherd’s 20 month reign as manager of Tamworth is over. The former Moor Green and Bromsgrove boss who was seen as the man to lead the club out of the wilderness resigned on Wednesday morning. Pressure had been mounting on Shepherd weekly as results and performances worsened. An emergency board meeti8ng three weeks ago gave him time to try and bring about an improvement in the club’s fortunes but since then the team have played three games losing two and drawing one. Directors discussed the seriousness of the situation at a meeting on Tuesday night and Shepherd’s resignation came after he talked to chairman John Sturdey on Wednesday morning. Shepherd planned to announce his decision to the players at training. Tamworth have no game this weekend but Shepherd has organised two friendly matches next week and will be taking charge for those games. Strudey confirmed that the club would be advertising the position and said long-serving trainer Barry Meads could step in as caretaker boss – a position he held before Shepherd was appointed – pending a permanent appointment. Shepherd said: “I have parted company with the club on amicable terms. I am terribly disappointed and did not really want to leave the club,“ he added. “I admit that my results have been terrible but I was hopeful that things would improve. I don’t want to moan about lack of money but there’s no doubt that with more cash available I would have been able to attract better players. I have always enjoyed myself at Tamworth. It’s been magic.” Sturdey said: “Unfortunately the results have just not come for him. It’s a question of motivation both by the players and the manager.”

09 December 1983 – Headline: “Shepherd asked to take on caretaker role”
Harry Shepherd will be staying on as caretaker manger until the board of directors appoint a successor. Shepherd – who resigned last week – has been asked to stay on as caretaker while candidates for the post are interviewed. He even refereed a friendly between Tamworth and Polesworth North Warwick at The Lamb on Tuesday. Shepherd will take charge of the side to meet Forest Green at The Lamb tomorrow.
