Alan Hampton

26 March 1981 – Headline: “Hampton Goes”
Alan Hampton was shocked an upset last night when he heard his 16 month reign as manager of trouble torn Tamworth Football Club had come to an end. The man who took over in November 1980 was told yesterday by club chairman Mike Tongue that his services were no longer required. The decision to sack Hampton came at the end of a three and a half hour crisis board meeting on Wednesday night. Hampton’s dismissal had been on the cards now for a number of weeks, following the club’s dismal run which has seen them plummet to 19th place in the Northern Premier League. Reports had suggested that Hampton was to resign after Tamworth’s bottom of the table clash with Morecambe last Saturday. During his 16 month stay at Kettlebrook the team have won only a handful of league matches and after a promising start to the season they now seem likely candidates for their third consecutive wooden spoon. Mike Tongue sad Hampton had worked hard while he was at the club and he was sorry to see him go.
