04 January 2001 – Headline: “Andrews defends his decision to sack Hendrie”
Tamworth chairman Bob Andrews said the decision to sack Lambs boss Paul Hendrie at the weekend was taken during a heated phone conversation. Andrews has been criticised for sacking Hendrie – who had been manager for five and a half years – over the phone and not in person. But Andrews confessed he made the call to Hendrie on Saturday on a different matter and had no intention of sacking him by phone. “The conversation became heated and I felt that our working relationship was not what it should be anymore,” said Andrews. “But the results this season have not been good and I felt we had to act. “Also, when we called Paul into the board meeting five weeks ago we demanded certain changes that have not been carried out. “Since that meeting, the results have not improved enough. “The club is operating over budget and the budget will now be cut for the rest of the season,” added Andrews. “We are looking to make a quick appointment to address the problem in the league. Tim Steele has been asked to take temporary charge with support from Derek Bond and Buster Belford. The appointment has to be the right one and we are looking for someone with experience in the Conference. They have to be able to keep us up this season and then take us forward.” Andrews denied rumours that Hendrie’s replacement had already been lined up but confessed that the club had received several phone calls from interested parties. “We have no one waiting in the wings to take the job on and I haven’t spoken to any managers yet. But there is a lot of interest in the club and we have had calls from several good quality managers,” he added.
